This is pretty much the one time a year I click on random MP3s from bands I’ve never heard of. And I never regret it. Go on, get to clicking. (Start with “Bully in Disguise,” or “Sara.”)
For the past several years, I’ve made it a point to listen to every single song on Gramophone’s year-end list, and I always find at least a few songs I’d never heard of that wind up being amazing (and show up on mixes I make for many years after). Even this year, as I’ve slowed way down on following new music - to the point that I only go to 1 or 2 music blogs a month, and even then don’t grab much to listen to unless I already know the artist - I am not forsaking Gramophone. It was the best music blog ever when I started reading music blogs in 2005, and it’s still the best one today. Go. Read. This.
It’s Friday afternoon! Which means you’re sitting at your desk, you’re counting down the minutes until the weekend (and the Awl Bawl, duh), you’re furiously refreshing Twitter in a desperate search for some kind of distraction to pass the last few hours of the work week, and the thought never even crossed your mind (understandably!) to check C-SPAN 2 (aka “the deuce”), where you would have found the most exciting thing happening on the internet right now (no, not a Washington Journal blooper reel): a filibuster! And not some bullshit procedural maneuver either, a real filibuster! With talking! And facts! And a really pissed off senator calling rich people crybabies!
Hey! That’s my guy!
